Step 1

Create a heading to be placed at the top center of the first page. Your heading should include your name, current address, phone number and email address, if applicable. You may want to produce larger font for your name, or emboldened font to make your name stand out amongst the other contact information.

Step 2

Write your professional goal under a heading of the same name. Explain your career ambition as concisely as possible. If you want to become a sportswriter, for instance, write: A position as sports writer for print or online publications.

Step 3

List any relevant jobs you have had under the heading, “Work Experience.” Start with the most recent positions first. Write brief summaries of your duties in each position, using short sentences like “Typed memos for director of admissions” or “Cleaned hotel rooms.” Only provide information that will lend itself to your credibility as the best person for the job to which you apply. Add the periods of time you worked at each job.

Step 4

List any achievements, such as Dean’s List, Graduation Honors, as well as Employee of the Month titles. Most honors are self-explanatory, but if you receive an unusual award, you can briefly describe the achievement.

Step 5

Add to your resume any degrees or certificates you have obtained. For example, if you have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, list this under a heading titled “Education.” Write out the type of degree you hold, as well as when and from which university you received it.

Step 6

Create a supplementary second page that lists any relevant activities or skills. You can title this page as “Activities” or “Skills” and simply list these bits of information starting with the most recent. If you can fit this information along with your Work Experience, Achievements and Education information on one page, you can create a separate page for references, instead. Either way, you should list at the end of your resume at least three references your prospective employer can contact.
